Mission

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.”–John 20:21 (NIV)

Parkwood Church is an intentionally missional church.  We believe that we are to "be the church" in the world.  In living into that vision, we have committed to not just donating money but participating in "Hands On" mission opportunities locally, regionally and globally.  We have placed our focus on these specific areas:

  • Homeless and Hungry Ministries
  • Children and Families at Risk
  • Disaster Relief and Mission Trips
  • Congregational and Community Support
  • Building Partnerships

HOMELESS AND HUNGRY MINISTRIES

East End Cooperative Ministries - every other month, the church prepares and serves a meal at EECM's Community House to 60 men and women who are homeless and hungry.

Under the Bridge Ministry - once a quarter the community collects, packages and distributes care packages and food to those living under the bridges in the Pittsburgh area.

Produce to People - Parkwood participates in the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank's Produce to People 3 times a year on the Northside of Pittsburgh.  We help distribute 2 tons of produce and other food that feeds 1,200 men, women and children.  We also have started offering a hot meal during the distribution.  In March of this year we distributed 320 hotdogs, snacks and drinks.

Light of Life  Rescue Mission - The church collects and distributes clothes and toiletries periodically to the shelter.  In addition to this, on the 3rd Sunday of November the church gathers after worship to prepare, deliver and serve a Thanksgiving style meal to the homeless and hungry at the Light of Life Rescue Shelter.  This past November, we served about 200 from the community.  We not only served but fellowshipped and prayed with our friends during the meal.

Veterans Place - Our newest mission endeavor is with Veteran's Place, located on Washington Boulevard.  This non profit organization transitions veterans with no place to live who are coming out of the hospital.  We have collected clothing, bedding, kitchen items and personal items which helped these veterans set up a place of their own.  We also are looking for volunteers to help with administrative tasks (typing and filing), organizing the food pantry and distributing.

Bread of Life Food Pantry - Parkwood collects donations weekly to help stock the pantry that is located in Etna.  We have also volunteered to help do the stocking and distributing.

AT - RISK CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

Mars Home for Youth - Parkwood has continued to strengthen this partnership over the years, from collecting items a couple times a year to the creation of a MHY Mission Team that is focused on needs and activities for the home.  We lead a "Friday Game Night" every other month that is a night filled with fun and games, refreshments and fellowship.  We also spend a Saturday in August every year leading a Field Day where kids and volunteers share in games and cook out on the wonderful MHY property.  What an impactful ministry this has been both for the MHY community but also for the Parkwood community of faith.

HEARTH Home - The mission of HEARTH is to provide a range of supportive services and housing that empowers families to become independent, self-sufficient, and adequately housed; and to foster low income housing opportunities to prevent homelessness and encourage safe, affordable housing.  We have partnered with HEARTH by helping transition apartments for new residents.  We have also participated in providing Christmas gifts to families and their annual spring shower to help stock needed items.

Calvert Memorial Presbyterian Kidz Club- Parkwood church prepares a meal for 30 or so kids from the Etna area once a month during their Kidz Club.

Camp HIGH HOPE - Supports this YMCA Camp for disabled children through financial donations.

DISASTER RELIEF AND MISSION TRIPS

Presbyterian Project - Part of the Leadership Team of the Presbyterian Project which began in response to Hurricane Sandy which brought together 5 churches in the North Hills to work together to be the hands and feet of Christ to brothers and sisters who have been effected by disaster.  We have commissioned mission workers to help those in need in New York, New Jersey, DuBois, PA, Oklahoma and local areas of need.  Trips are constantly being planned and those interested are always welcome to join us!

World Vision- The past 4 years Parkwood has sent 10-12 volunteers every year to work in the Wallace, WV area to work with World Vision to help those in the Applachia area rebuild and improve their living situations.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance - in addition to working with PDA on mission trips, we have supported them in their efforts to react to disasters both in this country and around the world.

PARTNERSHIPS

Crestfield Camp and Conference Center - Parkwood has been extremely supportive of the ministry of Crestfield.  We help sponsor children to attend summer camp.  We have done a number of construction and rehabilitation projects to many of the buildings and structures and served on the ministry team that helps vision for the camp.

Calvert Memorial Presbyterian Church - Parkwood has been in a partnership with Calvert Memorial for over 10 years.  We provide financial support to the church and children programming, as well as helping with maintenance support and serving on the Administrative Board of the Church.

Malawi Partnership - Parkwood has been in an intentional partnership of prayer and support with the St. James Church in Malawi for over 12 years.  We pray for one another and send representatives to each other's church every other year.  We have learned about one another's cultures, needs and worship.  This partnership has yielded deep relationships and renewed passion for our combined ministry.

Upper Room Church in Squirrel Hill - Parkwood supports a New Church Development in Squirrel Hill led by a son of Parkwood Church, Rev. Michael Gehrling and co pastor Chris Brown.
